CHAPTER V

THE WORKS (FRUIT) OF THE FLESH-*DEFINED*

   

  Again, "the works of the flesh are", suggest in the active sense that the functions or conditions listed have been done or should be expected to be done. Definitions that serve as warnings for us to guard against these natural functions and conditions.  A clear understanding of what these terms literally mean, is absolutely essential for any successful defense strategy. 

  

***Know your enemy!  

 

The apostle Paul's personal observation: "For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells." (Rom.7:18a)

  

WORKS defined: Bodily or mental effort exerted to do.  e.g.(moral acts)

 

WORKS(fruit) OF THE FLESH: (Greek equivalent)

ADULTERY  (moicheia)

Consenting to sexual activity between a married person not married to this sexual partner (married or  unmarried).

 

FORNICATION: (porneia)

The sexual act of an unmarried person with a married or unmarried partner.

 

UNCLEANNESS: (akatharsia)

Morally impure, unchaste, obscene, vile.

 

LICENTIOUSNESS: (aselgeia)

Wanton, exercising lust.

 

SENSUAL: (psuchikoi)

One connected or preoccupied with bodily or sexual pleasures; Lewd, lustful (Animal like).

 

IDOLATRY: (eidololatreia)

Excessive devotion to, or reverence for some person or thing; The worship of idols.

 

SORCERY: (pharmakia)

Dispenser of medication; Druggist; Poisoner; Witchcraft.

 

HATRED: (echthria)

Hostility; Enmities; Antagonism; Animosity suggest bitterness.

 

CONTENTIONS: (ereis)

Factions; Variance; Dissension; (fightings)

 

JEALOUSY: (zeloi)

Competition; Ambition; Emulation; (envyings)

 

WRATH: (thumoi)

Intense (anger); Rage.

 

STRIFE: (eritheiai)

The act of striving or vying with another; Selfish ambitions; Contentions; quarreling; struggle.

                 

DISSENSIONS: (dichostasiai)

Stirring up of discontent; The rebellion against the government in power (civil or religious); Sedition.

 

HERESY: (aireseis)

A religious belief opposed to the doctrine of a Church likely to cause a division or separation (schism).

 

ENVYINGS: (phthoroi)

A feeling of discontent and ill will because of another’s advantage, or possessions.

 

ENVY: (phthonou)

To desire another’s property or situation.

 

MURDERS: (thonos)(singular: thonou)

The unlawful and malicious killing of one human-being by another.

   

DRUNKENNESS: (methai)

The state or habit of being drunk.  Intoxicated, or habitually intoxicated.

 

RIVALRIES: (komoi)

To make merry; Be noisily festive; To take much pleasure.

 

INIQUITY: (poneria)

The lack of righteousness or justice; Sin; Wickedness; A wicked, unjust or unrighteous act.

 

COVETOUSNESS: (pleonexia)  [which is idolatry.]

To desire ardently something another person has; Tending to covet; Greedy; Avaricious [av-aric-ious].

 

MALICE: (kakia)

Active ill will; A desire to harm others; Do mischief; Spite.

 

FILTHINESS: (aischrotes)

Morally corrupt; Obscene; The quality or state of being filthy.

 

FOOLISH TALKING: (morologia)

Talking without using good sense or wisdom; Silly; Imprudent, Unwise; Ridiculous or absurd talking.

 

JOKING: (eutrapelia)

A mocking or bantering remark; Jesting; Funning; Ridicule; Taunt; Something to be laughed at or joked about.

 

GREEDY: (pleonektes)

(see covetousness)

 

PASSION: (pathos)

Implies a strong emotion that has an overpowering or compelling effect.  (e.g. passion overcomes reason.)

 

ANGER: (orgen)

Outburst in which self-control could be lost.  It usually shows itself in a desire to hit out at something or someone.

 

LIE (not): (pseudesthe)

To make a statement that one knows is false; To give false impressions; To deceive.

 

EFFEMINATE: (malakoi)

Having the qualities generally attributed to women. e.g. weakness, gentleness, delicacy, etc.  Unmanly.

 

EXTORTIONERS: (arpages)

An extorting (e.g. getting money, etc.) by violence, threats, or misuse of authority.  Sometimes applies to the exaction of too high a price.

 

ABUSERS: (arsenokoitai)

To hurt by treating badly; mistreat.  To use insulting, coarse, or bad language about or to another person.

 

THIEVES: (kleptai)

The act or practice of stealing; A person who steals, especially secretly.

 

MURMURERS: (gaggustia)

A grumbler; Mumble.

 

 

COMPLAINERS: (mempsimoiroi)

To find fault; To declare annoyance, express dissatisfaction.

 

DARING: (tolmetai)

Bold, fearless, darers. 

 

SELF-WILLED: (authadeis)

Stubborn, obstinate, self-satisfied.

   

PROUD: (phusioseis, tetuphomenoi)

Puffed-up, proud thoughts.

 

DISTURBANCES: (akatastasiai)

Uproar, confusion, agitation of mind or feeling.

 

HAUGHTY: (uperephanous)

Arrogant, lofty, supercilious.  Having or showing great pride in ones own self.  Disdain, contempt, or scorn for others.

 

BOASTFUL: (alazonas)

Braggart, to brag about, to be vainly proud.

 

INVENTORS OF EVIL THINGS: (epheuretas)

Associated with devisers of evil things.

 

DISOBEDIENT TO PARENTS: (goneusin apeitheis)

 

WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING: (asunetous)

Undiscerning (confused)

 

COVENANT BREAKERS: (asunthetous)

Untrustworthy, treacherous, perfidious.

 

WITHOUT NATURAL AFFECTION: (astorgous)

Without normal mental state or tendency.(no conscience)

 

UNMERCIFUL: (aneleemonas)

Mean, pitiless, relentless, cruel.

 

UNTHANKFUL: (acharistio)

Ungrateful.

 

SELF-LOVERS: (philautoi)

 

PLEASURE-LOVERS: (philedonoi)

 

MONEY-LOVERS: (philarguroi)

 

SAVAGE: (anemeroi)

Violent, uncontrolled, wild.  Violently cruel nature.

 

SLANDERERS: (diaboloi)

The utterance or spreading of a false statement harmful to another's character or reputation.

 

TRAITORS: (prodotai)

A person who betrays his country, cause, friends, etc.

 

HEADSTRONG: (propeteis)

One who is determined not to follow orders, advice, etc., but to do as they please.  Self-willed.   

UNRIGHTEOUSNESS: (adikia)

Not righteous, wicked, sinful.

   

STRIFE: (eridos)

The act of striving or vying with another.  Quarrels, contentions, conflict, struggle.

 

DECEIT: (dolou)

The act of representing as truth what is known to be false.  A lie, dishonest action, to trick, to deceive, to be deceptive.

 

MALIGNITY: (kakontheias)

Persistent, intense ill will or desire to harm others.  Great malice; Evil habit.

 

WHISPERERS: (psithuristas)

To talk quietly, as in gossiping, or plotting.  Something whispered like a secret or a rumor.

 

BACKBITERS: (katalalous)

To speak maliciously about an absent person or persons.  To slander.

 

HATERS OF GOD: (theostugeis)

(One who does not love God.)

 

INSOLENT: (ubristas)

Disrespectful of custom or established authority.  Impertinent, imprudent, proud.

 

WINEBIBBING: (oinophlogiais)

A person who drinks much wine.  Similar to drunkard.

 

CAROUSING: (potois)

To participate in a hilarious drinking party.  To drink much alcoholic liquor.

   

WANTONNESS: (aselgeiais)

To waste carelessly, or in luxurious pleasures.  Excesses of conduct.  Lavishness, extravagance. (immorality)

 

SENSELESS: (anoetoi)

Not having good sense; stupid, foolish, arising from a lack of judgment or intelligence.  (Sense=The ability of the brain to receive and react.)

 

HATEFUL: (stugetoi)

Having a strong feeling of dislike for a person or thing. Feeling or showing hate.

   

EVIL EYE: (ophthalmos poneros)

Looking upon another with evil intent.

 

 

BLASPHEMERS: (blasphemoi)

To speak irreverently or profanely of or to God.  To curse or revile.  Using profanity; swearing, cursing.

 

VANITY: (mataioteti)

The quality or fact of being vain, or excessively proud of oneself or one's quality or possessions.

 

LUST: (epithumia)

The desire to gratify the senses; bodily appetite, excessive sexual desire, especially as seeking unrestrained gratification. Pleasure, delight, appetite; as in 1Jn.2:16-Lust of the flesh.  Overmastering desire, lust for power. Lascivious, playful, sportive.

This brief study has shown the absolute necessity for self examination, so as to determine our own Spiritual condition. There is no other way in which we can observe ourselves in God's light.  Consequently, doing this self-examination will allow us to grow up in God's grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.  -AMEN-
